that story, that we were allowed to have
something be very bleak and see Carrie
filled with real despair and sadness."
All four women refer to the show as a
life-changing experience.
"It's been 11 years of my life. It
enriched my life in ways I couldn't have
imagined;' says the 43-year-old Parker,
who has a 5-year-old son with husband
actor Matthew Broderick, to whom
she has been wed for 11 years.Like
Broderick (the son of the late Irish-
American actor James Broderick and
a Jewish mother), Parker, whose father
was Jewish, considers herself culturally
Jewish.
Adds Nixon about the show,"It's
an amazing thing to be a part of. It's
not like I was on Petticoat Junction or
something. It's a famous show that I
can be really proud of'
Davis agrees. "We all got to play
strong women who never pretended to
be younger than we were she notes.
"We were never told to lose weight; we
were always celebrated as ourselves."
Cattrall says that playing the show's
resident sexpot has added intrigue
to her dating life — and through the
years, strangers have approached her
asking for advice about everything
from thongs to vibrators.
Nixon believes the show touched a
nerve with so many different kinds
of people because it fulfilled a fan-
tasy about living large in the big city.
"People lived vicariously through these
women because, really, who lives like
this? Who has this many fabulous men

to date and who eats at so many fan-
tastic restaurants? And who looks this
good all the time?"
Speaking of looking good, Pat Field's
envelope-pushing fashions were a big
part of the show's success. For the film,
Field designed 80 costumes for Parker
alone.
Unlike some of the other cast mem-
bers, Parker has been allowed to keep
almost all of her costumes. She doesn't
wear them in real life, she insists, but
rather stores them away in carefully
archived collections.
"My clothes proved to be very use-
ful because we needed all of them for
a scene in the movie where I go back
into my closet',' she says, adding that
she had to beg the Smithsonian to lend
her Carrie's desk, which is now part of
the museum's permanent collection.
"If the clothes had been given away or
sold, we wouldn't have been able to do
that scene."
There's already buzz about another
sequel, but Parker sounds cautious. "It
has taken the last two years of my life
to get to this point:' she says. "To ask for
anything beyond that would honestly
be greedy. But it is kind of hard not to
get emotional about it, because Sex and
the City means so much to so many
people."
