"When Samantha does something,
she goes all the way," says Cattrall with
a laugh. "Through the course of the
movie, I think she realizes that she's
given up too much. For Samantha, the
movie is about her need to reclaim
herself'
A five-time Emmy nominee for Sex
and the City, Cattrall recalls that when
she began work on the series at age 41,
she worried about being sexy enough to
make Samantha simmer. "I remember
I was really questioning if, at 41, I could
play a woman who was that sexual.
"Then, partly because of shows like
Sex and the City, people began to look
differently at 40. So, now, to have one of
the main characters at the end of a big
Hollywood movie say, "I'm 50 and I'm
fabulous" — that really gives me hope
for the next decade."
Nixon is thankful that Miranda is
allowed to be Miranda in the movie
— still too quick to anger, still unable
to trust as easily as she should. When
the film begins, Steve and Miranda are
having so many problems they haven't
hit the sheets for more than six months.
"I think she's pretty busy and
stressed:' says Nixon, 43."I'm not
saying that a lot of it isn't her fault,
but it takes two to not tango. I think
Miranda's always been very indepen-
dent; she operates better alone.
"So when it seems like this together
thing with Steve has maybe been a
mistake, she's very eager to bolt:' says

Nixon, a mother of two (she recently
told People magazine that she is rais-
ing her daughter, 11, and son, 5, with
former boyfriend Danny Mozes in
his Jewish faith). Nixon, who was in
a 15-year relationship with her high-
school sweetheart, an English professor,
has been dating girlfriend Christine
Marinoni, an education advocate, for
five years now
Charlotte"s journey is, largely, a joy-
ful one. After a decade of struggling
with infertility, her pregnancy is reason
for celebration.
"If you were to ever look through
the show and really count up all the
things that go wrong, there are a lot of
things that go wrong for Charlotte," says
Davis, 43 and single. "In a way it felt like
[motherhood] was the golden pot at
the end of the rainbow for her."
And what of Carrie and Mr. Big?
Well, it's complicated, very compli-
cated. There's a marriage proposal, but
whether the wedding takes place or not
gives the movie plenty of nail-biting
suspense.
"I know that there are people who
like the show who'll expect the joy, the
good times, the whimsy, the clothes, the
cocktails and the salty language,' notes
Parker. "What they might not expect is
that the shank of the movie is pretty
sad. It's sad because if you invest 10
years in a relationship, and you lose it, it
has to have value and meaning.
