Paint The Town JCC gallery features diverse works by Israeli artists. Elizabeth Applebaum Special to the Jewish News W hen Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman, Celine Dion and Alicia Keys step out for a big evening, they often wear jewelry with a distinctive sparkle, a colorful swirl of sea-blue, cherry-red or bright- yellow Swarovski crystals dancing in designs by Israeli artist Michal Negrin. Seventeen years ago, Negrin left her kibbutz and moved to Tel Aviv, where she opened a small shop and sold handmade jewelry. Today, Negrin's necklaces, earrings and bracelets are found not only throughout Israel, but also throughout the world. Samples from Negrin's collection also are on their way to Metro Detroit. From June 14-Aug. 7, the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit's Janice Charach Gallery will host "Fresh Paint from Israel," an exhibit highlighting the work of Israeli artists including Negrin, David Gerstein and Rachel Timor. The exhibit, co-sponsored by the Danielle Peleg Gallery in West Bloomfield, is a reflection of the JCC gallery's commitment to emerging Jewish and Israeli artists, especially in this, its chaff (18th) year, and in cel- ebration of Israel's 60th birthday, said gallery director Terri Steam. "We will have something for everyone, from jewelry to landscapes, oils to really fun pieces by artists like David Gerstein!' Gerstein, famous for his bright, whimsical creations that can be seen at the Israel Museum, developed an imagination early on. He and his twin brother created worlds from pieces of cardboard and to this day, he writes, art is like his "bread and water and air!' His works are "fruit that the tree has sprouted. I don't have to invent anything or wrack my brain on how to process a grandiose idea: Things sim- ply grow by themselves." Rachel Timor's career also had humble beginnings. Timor started out painting on the inside of dresser draw- ers; today, she is known for her paint- ings that duplicate the charming world of childhood photos. "It's a diverse collection:' Steam says of the new exhibit, with items that reflect the past (Michal Negrin's style is Victorian) and the present (bright, simple pieces are especially popular in Israel today) and show a distinctly Israeli style, both Middle Eastern and influenced by the European culture into which many of these artists, and their parents, were born. All works will be for sale, with something for every budget, Steam says. Danielle Peleg spent months researching exactly which artists to bring, focusing purely on "quality" "It's a phenomenal show, with all different kinds of media: etchings and oils — and all different subjects" she says. "My goal was to bring a 'fresh paint; a fresh look [at Israeli art], to the com- munity; so most of these artists are new to us, and all of them are excited to be showing in Michigan." ❑ expires 6/5/08 I 111 is se vi, vs is is is vs is s, is is ..si is w. is is fresh fruit basket and 4 homemade dessert tray. 1 I s " " " "' ......% BUY ANY II DELI Min' - 0 • 1 2ND LB 14 1 $9•Put .
