late Geraldine Rochkind; brother of

ROSE L.
SCHWARTZ, 95, of
Southfield, died May
14, 2008.
Rose was born in
Detroit on Aug. 31,
1912. She gradu-
ated cum laude from
Schwartz
Detroit Northern
High School in 1929.
She married Nathan Schwartz
in October 1933 and, in 1948, they
opened a business, Schwartz Furniture
on Davison.
They jointed Temple Emanu-El in
Oak Park in 1953 and were among its
founding members. Rose continued
to be a member until her death. She
served as president of Hadassah in the
Greater Detroit area and was a lifetime
member.
"Rosie," as she was affectionately
called, was always a woman of the
times. She loved the arts and her
talents included cooking, baking,
playing piano, knitting, crocheting,
needlepoint and interior design. She
did everything in life with style and
grace.

Until her passing, she worked the
daily crossword puzzle, read books
and kept up with politics.
Deep gratitude is extended to the
Rosenzweig family, David Goldberg
and Dr. Melissa Stevens for their care
and devotion.
Rose is survived by her daughter,
Carole Olefsky; grandchildren, Cheryl
and Gary Grove, Beth and Ralph
Wilson; great-grandchildren, Max
Grove, Jack Grove, Sophia Rose Wilson;
son-in-law, Iry Kane; caregivers, Nelly,
Terry, Erica, Vladka.
Mrs. Schwartz was the beloved
wife of the late Nathan Schwartz;
loving mother of the late Janet
Kane; dear sister of the late Edward
Coopersmith and the late Dora
Rosenzweig.

MAJOR A. SIEGEL, 99, died May 23,
2008.
Mr. Siegel received a bachelor of sci-
ence in mechanical engineering from
Michigan State University in 1931;
he was the founder of Alpha Literary
Society, which later became Alpha
Epsilon Pi.
He was a member of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and
was employed with J.E. Woodwell
Company, consulting engineers, in
New York City.
He was an officer of Toledo Window
Cleaning Company, active member
and committee chairman of Toledo
Junior Chamber of Commerce, active
member of Toledo Variety Club,
member of B'nai B'rith, Collingwood
Avenue Temple and Glengary Country
Club.
As a commissioned officer in the
Navy during World War II, he was
commanding officer of USS L.S.M.
338 in the Amphibious Forces; he
saw action in the Pacific Theater,
served in Okinawa, Eniwetok, Guam,
Saipan, the Philippines, and served
as liaison with the Australian Task
Force.
He came to Detroit in 1947 and
was owner of Allied Building Service
Company and was president of
the Wayne County Maintenance
Contractors Association. He was chair-
