Interchange board.
PI, a national nonpolitical, non-
profit organization, seeks to provide
an enhanced understanding of Israel
and Middle East peace. It is indepen-
dently funded through individuals and
foundations.
PI has brought 4,500 Metro
Detroiters to Israel. Past Detroit-
area participants include Rev. Daniel
Appleyard, Christ Church Dearborn;
Rev. Kenneth J Flowers, Greater New
Mount Moriah Baptist Church; U.S.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.; U.S.
Reps. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick and
Candice Miller; and University of
Detroit Mercy School of Architecture
Dean Stephen Vogel.
University of Michigan President
Mary Sue Coleman will be co-leading
a seminar for leading University presi-
dents this summer. ❑
Salute To Veterans
Dr. A. Robert Spitzer of Southfield gave the opening blessing at a
Memorial Day ceremony commemorating the veterans from Michigan's
Mackinac Island. He read sections from the Yizkor prayer as well as the
Kaddish. He took part in the May 26 service as the leader of the Jewish
congregation on the island, Kehillat Hatzav Hgadol (Congregation of the
Great Turtle).

Hills real estate agent and
communal leader, has
been elected national chair of Project
Interchange (PI), an institute of the
American Jewish Committee. She suc-
ceeds Dottie Bennett of Washington,
D.C.
"Real insights about a country, his-
torians tell us, are best absorbed by
observing and listening to its people,"
said Rands.
"Project Interchange, an organiza-
tion that seeks to share insights about
Israel with seminar participants from
around the world in weeklong pro-
grams, does just the
Rands will guide the next phase of
the development of the organization,
which hosts 28 seminars per year to
Israel. She hopes to expand its ongo-
ing programs for its seminar alumni,
to enlarge and reinforce their on-the-
ground Israel experience.
Rands has been on the board of
Project Interchange since 1997.
"Introducing Israel through first-
hand seminars to leaders in a variety
of sectors and from all over the world
allows me to share my passion for
Israel;' she said. "The global impact of
Project Interchange is inspiring and
attracted me to this organization."
