MAKE EVVRY MOMEN
Nation of Islam leader Louis
Farrakhan, a classic anti-Semite, as
a spiritual inspiration and gave him
a Spirit of Detroit Award and a key
to the city. The Farrakhan honor
besmirched Detroit and people
of good will in general, regard-
less of race, ethnicity or religion.
It detracted from the inroads pur-
posely achieved by black and Jewish
groups to improve racial harmony
and galvanize understanding. All
Kilpatrick's press office could do
was criticize me for taking the
mayor to task.
It was Farrakhan who had gone
on record ridiculing the "Nazi-
like State of Israel" and blaming
America's ills on Jewish-controlled
halls of government, business,
finance, entertainment and the
press.
Farrakhan is a man who preaches
that the Talmud teaches that blacks
were cursed, that "poor Jews died
while big Jews were at the root of
what you call the Holocaust" and
that Jews plotted to crucify Jesus.
The minister's defamatory speeches
have served to alienate both Jews
and whites, which certainly can't
help the black cause or Detroit's
cause.
Kwame Kilpatrick has failed the
ultimate test — that of time with
his feet exposed to the political fire.
He held such promise. He offered
real hope. Voters and supporters,
including many Jews, felt he had the
vision and intellect to change the
city for the better.
His abrupt descent following his
2005 re-election crippled his politi-
cal career. You wonder what the peo-
ple of Detroit who chose to re-elect
him over the less dynamic Freman
Hendrix will do if he stays in office
to the next election in 2009.
Still, Kilpatrick's dream of a new
spirit and a new energy in Detroit
is worth pursuing with vigor. The
Jewish community has too much at
stake not to have an integral role in
the pursuit with whoever ultimately
assumes the city reins. 1-
Whether it was raising our family, pursuing careers or giving back to the community, we've done our
best to make every moment of our lives count. The same is true now That's why we chose a Brookdale
community for our retirement. Our days begin and end in a spacious apartment home. But in between
there are endless opportunities to do the things that matter most to us, like travel, fitness, hobbies and
enjoying the company of friends and family.
Come see how our community can help you make the most of your life.
It'll only take a moment.
