Grossman has taught at FJA for seven years and is founding head of the school's Bible department. Economics made it impossible for him to leave Michigan — he had hoped to Rabbi Eric return to his native Grossman Toronto — so he recently formally applied for the job. A search committee was formed in March to find a new head of school to replace Rabbi Lee Buckman, who is in Israel with FJA seniors, but will leave the school when classes end in mid-June. The committee had a number of applicants and interviewed a few, but when Grossman became available, his name rose to the top of the list, said Dr. Marc Borovoy, FJA president. The committee's recommendation was approved by the FJA board May 19. "He's well loved by the students, parents and teachers;' Borovoy said. "He's unique, congenial and extremely bright. He brings a high level of integrity, [with an] ethic and moral background that he models himself, based on Torah values, that he can imbue on our students. "Rabbi Grossman is uniquely quali- fied to implement the educational and religious philosophy of the school and to hit the ground mining." Grossman will work with an interim administrative team he's already familiar with that includes Beverly Stone, Jerry Gutman and Renee Wohl. Rabbi Aaron Bergman, head of Judaics, leaves at the end of the school year to become a pulpit rabbi at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills. "It's been an amazing opportunity to be able to take said Grossman of Southfield. "The school has really been my family in Detroit since I moved here. When we came, we didn't have children, but we had countless stu- dents over for Shabbat and the whole school was invited to the bris of our son." Grossman came to FJA from the Gann Academy/New Jewish High School in Boston, where he taught and was director of Judaic activi- ties. In addition to work at FJA, he has taught in the community, for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and at several Conservative and Orthodox congregational schools. He also serves as rabbi (non-resident) of Shaar Hashomayim Congregation in Windsor. He lived in Israel for four years, studying at Yeshivat Ha-Mivtar and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. A two-time recipient of the Hebrew University's Bible prize, and a fellow at the university's Institute for Advanced Studies, Grossman went on to com- plete his undergraduate studies and receive his bachelor's of art degree with distinction from York University in Toronto. Rabbi Grossman received his rab- binic ordination in Jerusalem from Rabbi Daniel Channen, with the recognition of the Chief Rabbi of Israel. He is completing his gradu- ate studies at Brandeis University in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies. The role of head of school seems "the next natural step in my career',' Grossman said. "I think the Academy is one of the gems of this community:' Grossman said. "It's been an honor to work there for so many years, and a great honor to work in the tradition already estab- lished there. It's a place where all Jews will feel embraced and respected, and where young Jewish men and women will be able to discover their place in the future of the Jewish people' The Academy, founded in 2000, has 225 high school students. Grossman and his wife, Karynne Naftolin, both Toronto natives, have two sons, Ezra, 4, and Max, 2, and are active members of the Young Israel of Southfield congregation. ❑ Messages (3) i ° F BlackBerry® Curve' 8330 Smartphone 2.0 megapixel camera with flash & 5x digital zoom • Broadband Access Connect capable • Integrated Email, Phone, SMS, & Browser • Media Player with microSD" memory support • Bluetooth ® Wireless Technology • Telenav® Maps and Telenav® GPS Navigator • Easy-to-use intuitive trackball navigation • 35–key backlit QWERTY Keyboard World's First Authorized BlackBerry Store Now Open in Farmington Hilts 31380 Orchard Lake Rd, Farmington Hit M t 48334 (Southeast corner of Orchard Lake Rd & 14 Mile Rd) 248 855-5777 *Our Surcharges (incl.
