ichael Weiss grew up
in Texas, but he found
his career direction in
Michigan. Although Weiss always
knew he wanted to be a pianist, it
wasn't until he went to Interlochen
Arts Camp as a teen that he discovered
he wanted to be a jazz pianist.
The keyboardist, 50, who since has
returned to Michigan to perform his
own compositions, appears May 23-24
with the Michael Weiss Quintet at the
Music Hall in Detroit.
"I'll be playing mostly my own
music with maybe a standard or two,"
says Weiss, who will be joined by Jon

Gordon on sax, Ugonna Okegwo on
bass, George Fludas on drums and
Daniel Sadownick on percussions.
"I do strictly instrumental music
and don't talk very much during a
performance. Sometimes, if there's a
particular anecdote about a particular
piece, I will call attention to that; but I
try to let the music speak for itself and
communicate however people receive
it:'
Weiss, who recalls appearances at
Detroit's annual Labor Day weekend
jazz festivals and the Max M. Fisher
Music Center, is likely to play songs
from his latest recording, Soul Journey.
