Painting Pleasures
It's the last weekend to catch the
Detroit Institute of Arts exhibition
"Life's Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists'
Brush with Leisure, 1895-1925," an
exhibit exploring how city-dwellers
at the turn of the last century spent
their leisure time. Closing on May 25,
the exhibit features 80 paintings by
American artists known collectively as
the Ashcan School.
Instructed by artist/teacher Robert
Henri to "paint what was real:' the
men represented in the show painted
what they lived: Many works feature
bars and cafes where they hung out or
performances they attended. Several
were former newspaper illustrators
used to sketching events while they
were happening.
Artists represented include Henri,
George Bellows, Alfred Maurer,
William Glackens, John Sloan, George
Luks, Guy Pene du Bois, Leon Kroll
and others that bring the art of hav-
ing fun to life — though not Jewish
artist Theresa Bernstein. A New York
Realist committed to painting real
life — trolley riders, theater lobbies,
street scenes — Bernstein was greatly
influenced by the style of the Ashcan
School and remained good friends
with its members.
At a time when women artists
often were dismissed as dilettantes,
Bernstein won the respect of the New
York critics as someone whose paint-
ings were "as good as a man's:' She was
married for 61 years to fellow Jewish
artist William Meyerowitz, whose
works included a series of etchings of
Albert Einstein.
The couple made several trips to
Israel — from 1942 to 1973 — and
painted scenes of the Holy Land as
well.
Bernstein — the oldest living
woman artist in America — died on
Feb. 12, 2002, at the age of 111.

Fall TV Preview
A couple of weeks ago, the broad-
cast networks announced their fall
schedules. The ABC show October
Road, starring
Bryan Greenberg,
got the ax after
a long period in
which its fate was
uncertain. In a
surprise, ABC said
it would terminate
Boston Legal, co-
Richard
starring William
Benjamin
Shatner, after a
short 13-week fall season.
Replacing Shatner as ABC's "old
Jewish actor" is Richard Benjamin,
69, who will have a supporting role
in the new ABC series Life on Mars,
about a police detective who gets
into a car crash and wakes-up to
find himself in 1973.
Over at FOX, Lost producer J.J.
Abrams has a new drama, Fringe. It
features a female FBI agent inves-
tigating paranormal phenomena.
Mitchell Hurwitz, the producer
of Arrested Development, is the
creator of the upcoming FOX ani-
mated comedy series Sit Down and
Shut Up. Henry Winkler is one of
the main voice actors in this show
about a high school's faculty.
Southfield native and Hillel Day
School of Metropolitan Detroit
attendee Selma Blair, 35, co-stars
in the fall 2008
NBC comedy
series Kath and
Kim. She plays
a self-absorbed
young woman who
separates from
her husband and
Selma Blair
moves back home
with her mother
(Molly Shannon). The odd thing
is that Shannon, 43, is only eight
years older than Blair.
