Man Of Courage from page B63
Faber says it was now-retired
Holmes principal Jack MacDonald
who allowed him the freedom to try
out new learning strategies.
"When I was a student teacher, he
[MacDonald] would listen to my theo-
ries for hours on end:' Faber says. "He
allowed me to forgo grades in favor of
having students assess their own work.
He was a very special leader to learn
and observe from!'
Family members also inspired him.
"I was very influenced by my
father's perseverance and integrity,"
he says.
His dad, Izzy, was run over by a
streetcar at the age of 2.
"He had two artificial legs, but
he was not handicapped. He sold
Chevrolets for 50 years and taught me
that you have nothing if you don't have
your integrity"
Looking Ahead
Faber's wife, Sandi, who he began dat-
ing in high school, "has helped shape
me and advise and guide me;' he says.

She will continue in her position as

And new inspirations have arisen.
School board treasurer Dr. Nelson
(Nick) Hersh tells this story:
"I remember at a board meeting
when Dr. Faber was being honored as
superintendent of the year. His twin
grandsons, who weren't even a year
old, attended in the audience.
"While the presentation was being
made, one of them (apparently)
wanted to get to his grandfather and,
showing the persistence he must have
inherited from Dr. Faber, proceeded to
crawl to him, on camera, probably 30
feet to get to his grandfather's lap.
"I wasn't sure who had the biggest
smile, grandpa or grandson. The entire
audience could only share in that joy-
ous moment!"
All in all, "It's been a great ride
Faber says. "If you can learn to wait
out the peaks and valleys, ultimately
good things happen." E
