More B'nai Mitzvah • Temple Kol Ami — Zachary Stone (Saturday) Braces work by putting steady pressure on teeth and by staying In place for a certain amount of time. Most kids just need regular braces wtth wires and maybe rubber bands to keep even pressure on the teeth. Recent research shows that light constant pressure by the new "space-age" type wires move the teeth more efficiently and more comfortably than heavy forces. Heavy force appliances such as headgear are inefficient and replaced by simpler appliances and In many cases, growth guidance appliances. The wires on your braces help to move your teeth and the rubber bands can assist In correcting the alignment and the way your teeth fit together. Nowadays, we attempt to straighten the teeth without having to remove any. Many times a palate expander Is used to make more room to accommodate the teeth, as opposed to reducing the number of teeth to ftt into the space you have. Of course this cannot always be done, as the orthodontist must consider each case individually and we would not want to compromise stability. Expansion is usually done on a growing individual, which is why modem orthodontics is treating individuals earlier as opposed to later. lt Is rarely too late to consider orthodontics and the orthodontist can go over your special case with you.
