"Since each chuppah is a one-of-a-kind work of art, there's no way to predict how long it will take," she said. "It depends on how much or how little detail is involved; six to nine months would be ideal. For something simple, I would need less time." Each custom chuppah is individual- ly priced based on the design, includ- ing the type and amount of fabric used, if embroidery, lace or quilting are involved and the word quantity. Marla refers to her husband, Alan, as her technical support. "He makes sure that all the photos are the best they can be before printing, and he makes all of the frames for the chuppot, not to mention giving his opinions on design — but only when asked!" An art major in college, Marla said, "I have always loved making things. I've tried just about every craft there is to try, but working with fabric with the infinite number of colors and patterns and designs is very exciting to me:" Her chuppot have been featured in the 2007 "Mazel Toy! The Art of Marriage" show at the Janice Charach Gallery in the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. Matt and Lindsay's chuppah was included at the 2004 "Contemporary Fiber: Without Boundaries:' the annual fiber arts exhibit at the same JCC. "It gives me great joy to work with the families, and know that I am mak- ing a work of art they will have, to pass down:' Marla said. "The chuppah starts out as an idea, but when the families see the finished product it is very rewarding to see the joy my work brings." Added Matt, "The final creation was a masterpiece that Lindsay and I could truly call ours. It tells our story, the story of our families and my mom even left space for the story of 'our family to come.'" Now that Matt and Lindsay are par- ents to 91/2-month-old Madeleine, Matt said, "Our chuppah is something that we hope to pass down to our children, so that they can know where they came from as they look forward to the future of their own. The chuppah my mom created is a gift that will keep on giving, hopefully for generations to come." ❑ CZ 443) 306.---le op • toloto.jo ,eeoakm(A,.40‘i lowio.0-1.firreparee.Goi-ttioGo 04J t,t-ekrre or-TM i-fe • • - ' • • • • - Turn your old GOLD into CASH!
