A lively carnival on school grounds helped Hillel students
celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary.

illel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit
celebrated Israel's 60th
birthday with its annual Israel
Independence Day Carnival. The May
8 carnival was filled with games,
face painting, other activities, plus
an Israeli cafe with wonderful food.
The carnival topped off a day of
festivities of learning and fun, which
included Israeli dancing, an all-
school zimriyah (song festival), and
the making of a 60th anniversary-
themed mosaic artwork.
Students also learned about the
difficult situation in Sderot, where
citizens face daily attacks from
Gaza. Students then wrote cards and
made video greetings that will be
sent to families in Sderot.
Hillel's eighth-grade class cel-
ebrated Israel's 60th in Israel in a
fun-filled evening on Ben Yehudah
Street followed by a day learning
about the armored division, its role
in the War of Independence and its
function in the military today. Then
the class headed for the foothills of
Jerusalem where they participated
in a 90-minute bike ride near the
Burma Road.EJ
