Israel's Meow
Anyone who's been to Israel knows that cats run free in cities and
towns. This one, shot by West Bloomfield Rabbi Jason A. Miller in the
Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City, shows its patriotism as well.
The photo earned third-place in our Israel photo contest.

Dear
Bar , y asth-
ma is a problem
right now (due
to seasonal
changes). Any
nutritional advice? Thanks, Paul.
A
nswer: Dear Paul, A little
background: the word
asthma is derived from
the Greek word for "panting."
Many experts believe that asthma
is likely caused or worsened by a
combination of factors, among
them: genetic predisposition,
allergic reactions, infections, di-
etary patterns, exercise, cigarette
smoke, air pollutants, changes in
temperature/humidity, and stress.
According to the University of
Maryland Medical Center (a
principal source for this article),
some studies suggest that
foods high in antioxidants/
flavonoids (e.g., apples and
selenium rich foods) may
protect against asthma.
Red wine may lessen
. ,
.,
symptoms (however,
sulfite-rich foods, e.g.,
shrimp,
, • 1 , c,) ,
processed potatoes, and
dried fruit may trigger
asthma).
Other food/nutrient con-
nections:
• Studies indicate that asthmatics
often exhibit low levels of seleni-
um, potassium and magnesium;
• Western diets high in processed/
fatty foods and low in fruits
and vegetables may be linked to
higher rates of asthma;
• Some research suggests that
omega-3 fatty acids from flax-
seed and fish oil may be helpful.
