Love Of Zion
Hiller expresses his strong support
of Israel by buying about $50 million
worth of merchandise a year from that
country. He also donated funds to help
build a water reservoir in Israel, and now
is helping to finance construction of a
$10 million visitors' center in the Golan
Valley, destroyed in a Hamas War rocket
attack two years ago.
"I probably could buy many of the
same foods from American suppliers,
but I prefer to send the money to Israel;'
he said. "The [Palestinian] intifada really
upset me and accelerated my food pur-
chases there and my intense support of
Israel"
Hiller currently is president of the
local Jewish National Fund chapter and
has received the group's Tree of Life
Award. He also has been honored by
Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield and the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
International. He is a member of Temple
Beth El and Temple Israel, both in
Oakland County.
He and his wife, Marge, have three
college-age sons, Justin, Andy and
Spence. Justin, 26, lives in Marina del
Rey, Calif., and is "learning the grocery
business:' said Hiller, working for a
large California supermarket chain
to gain the insights and innovative
techniques of the food business. "He'll
return to Michigan next year with the

plan of eventually taking over Hiller's
Markets:' said Jim Hiller.

Philanthropic, Inviting
Hiller's medical philanthropy knows no
bounds. His mother, Harriett (Horowitz)
Hiller, died of amyotrophic lateral sclero-
sis (also know as Lou Gehrig's disease)
at the age of 76,"and I had promised her
I would do everything I could to help
eradicate that terrible disease," he said.
"So I've devoted a great deal of money
and resources to this cause" Hiller has
spent "millions" helping to establish
ALS research centers at Wayne State
University in Detroit, the University of
Michigan and at Columbia and Cornell
universities in New York.
"It's all made possible by Hiller's
Markets," he beamed.
A recent survey of some customers
at two of the Hiller's Markets brought
a consensus as to why they shop there,
expressed by Suzi Kolodin of West
Bloomfield: "If you can't find something
you want, just tell them and they'll get it
for you',' she marveled.
But some of the shoppers also com-
plained about the recent hike in food
prices everywhere.
Answered Hiller: "The food business
today is really rough. The profit mar-
gins are very thin; you make money in
pennies, not dollars. So you must have
plenty of depth, and that's what we pride
ourselves in — having a large variety.
And our customers continue to demand
high-quality products; you can't succeed
without that"
