I felt compelled to advise you that I, too, was an eyewitness to history in Jerusalem during the struggle for Israeli independence. The theme of the Palmach History Museum in Ramat Aviv — "Not on a Sliver Plate" — means that Israeli inde- pendence was not served on a silver plat- ter; it was won by blood and courage of people like Ann Newman and me. Unlike Ann, I was inducted to the Haganah in September 1947, two months before the U.N. voted on the partition of Palestine. I was an active arms-bearing member of the Haganah in Talpiyo, a Jewish neighborhood between Jewish Jerusalem and Kibbutz Ramat Rachel, overlooking the road to Bethlehem. I was wounded on May 15 when a lead a squad of Haganah members in liberating the British Camp Allenby, which the man- date authorities "conveniently" opened to the Arabs even though the camp was on Jewish National Fund land. I will be sharing my story at a lunch and learn May 10 after Shabbat morning services at Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park. Joseph "Jerry" Lapides Southfield Alex's Story Just read your Editor's Letter about Alex Graham and I was touched ("Beyond The Door); May 1, A5). I didn't know Alex, but at the time of her diagnosis and eventual death, I was teaching piano to many of her friends, and there were lots of tears from these young people at the time. Of course, I didn't know that in just a few years, I would be battling this terrible disease of cancer (ovarian) myself; so now her story is even more touching to me. I look forward to reading her story when the book comes out. Thanks for making us aware of this courageous young woman's story. He should have been identified as the late Wally Sampson. • In "A Bountiful Wally Passover" (May 1, Sampson page A37), Yad Ezra's operations director, Elaine Ryke, should have been included as the person responsible for all inside operations of the Berkley agency, includ- ing those involving clients, food, vol- unteers and the warehouse. She also is responsible for the Passover distribution, directing support staff and volunteers. •Arnie Goldman's Community View "Horror and Heroes" (May 1, A26) should have stated that 570,000 Hungarian Jews died in the Holocaust. • In "New Time For Commemoration" (May 1, page A8), the phone number for Workmen's Circle should have been listed as (248) 432-5677. t*s RENO 'cha Don't Know Which church in downtown Philadelphia has a set of kosher dishes? —Goldfein THAT "NICE JEWISH BOY" PHIL SCHOSTAK HAS MADE THE MOVE TOIVIATTHEWS—HARGREAVES, AND SO SHOULD YOU!
