Eight Over Eighty honorees know
what it means to make a difference.

Apartments & Services
(JAS) will present the 15th
annual Eight Over Eighty-Tikkun
Olam Award Ceremony and fundraiser.
Senior adults 80 or older throughout
the community were nominated by
family members, frieands and com-
munity agencies; eight were chosen by
a panel of judges to receive this honor.
The event is raises money for the
JAS Quality of Life Fund and provides
items not covered in a resident's basic
fee, such as activities, special trans-
portation, Jewish cultural program-
ming and Butzel camp.
These eight people have come into
their commitment of repairing the
world honestly and naturally, and
over the years they all have occupied
an inimitable place in people's hearts.
Their exemplary leadership in their
professional and personal lives has
had a marked impact on the Detroit
Jewish community and beyond.

Sam Barnett taught
music for 30 years
in the Detroit Public
Schools and has
performed at every
Jewish venue in the
Detroit area. He is a
native Detroiter born
Sam Barnett
to Russian parents,
and he cheerfully brings a unique
style of performance to his live shows.
His repertoire is made up of literally
thousands of Jewish and Yiddish songs.
While in Israel, he often listened to
others performing, then transcribed
the songs onto sheet music to bring
them back home to perform. He was
influenced in the 1930s by the Yiddish
folk music he performed as a member
of the pit orchestra at the old Littman's
People's Theater in Detroit. He plays
clarinet and other woodwinds.

Henry
Friedman

Henry Friedman
is an eternal opti-
mist. He was born
in Rustenburg,
Germany, and, at the
beginning of WWII,
he and his family
were forced to leave
home and live in a
ghetto in Poland.

After turning 16, he spent the next 41/2
years in various extermination camps
during the Holocaust. Miraculously, he
and his two brothers survived. Henry
later drew creativity from this experi-
ence when he began creating beautiful
metal sculptures. People reached out
to him in his darkest hour and he's
dedicated a good portion of his life
to reaching back. At 84, he still vol-
unteers at the Fleishman Residence-
Blumberg Plaza and the Brown Day
Care Center in West Bloomfield, both
associated with the Jewish Home and
Aging Service.

the role of the
National Council of
Jewish Women is to
identify a commu-
nity need and fill it.
Dorothy Kaufman
Dorothy
has used her time
Kaufman
and talent quietly
over the years, leav-
ing her mark on various programs,
such as helping establish the kosher
Meals on Wheels program in 1973.
When the program grew, she identi-
fied another need. When some clients
with handicaps were frustrated by the
lack of access at many public venues,
she spent two years working on the
Greater Detroit Access Guide that was
published by NCJW and distributed
free. More recently, she earned the
degree of Archival Administration
from Wayne State University. With this
knowledge and expertise, she directed
the compilation of the history of
NCJW for the Reuther Library at WSU.

Sylvia Mevis has
spent almost her
entire life working
to repair the world.
She was orphaned
as a baby and fos-
tered into a Jewish
family. After raising
Sylvia Mevis
three daughters of
her own, she didn't
stop there. Through the years, she fos-
tered 30 teenage children, giving them
the love and attention absent from
their lives. She began volunteering for
Sinai Hospital's "Service with Love"
