SPORTS Still Running Motor City Striders' race director gets back into coaching. Steve Stein Special to The Jewish News A t age 65, Ed Kozloff is embarking on a new adven- ture in the world of run- ning. Or, as he calls it, "a new link in the chain." Kozloff, president of the Motor City Striders running club since 1975 and the race director for more than 900 running events, has been named coach of the men's and women's cross country teams at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. This isn't Kozloff's first coach- ing experience. He coached cross country and track at Highland Park Community College in the 1970s and at the University of Michigan- Dearborn in the 1980s. But a call from Schoolcraft Athletic Director Sid Fox, who was the A.D. at U-M Dearborn when Kozloff coached there, caught Kozloff off guard. "The call from Sid came out of the blue. I don't think I'd talked to him in 10 years:' Kozloff said. "He told me about the opening at Schoolcraft and asked if I was interested. It didn't take long for me to say yes. "I had very positive experiences coaching at Highland Park and U-M Dearborn, and I think Schoolcraft is an attractive college choice for area high school runners, considering the price of gas these days:" "We're very pleased to have Ed Kozloff join Schoolcraft," Fox said. "He brings integrity and tremendous coaching experience to our cross country programs. The college will benefit academically and athletically from his presence on our campus." Schoolcraft has an outstanding women's cross country program. The team finished 18th in 2006 and 32nd in 2007 at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I meet. Last year's team had a combined 3.67 She's At Skidmore Olivia Weiner is a freshman outfield- er on the Skidmore College (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) softball team. The Franklin resident and Detroit County Day School grad went to the plate just five times in the Thoroughbreds' first 34 games this grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, the highest among NJCAA Division I teams. There hasn't been a men's cross country team at Schoolcraft for years. Kozloff will have to build that pro- gram from the ground up. The men will compete in NJCAA Division III, which means no scholarship money can be used. Kozloff has been retired since 2005. That's when he accepted a too-good- to-pass-up buyout package from Warren Consolidated Schools, where he was a teacher, track and swimming coach for 36 years. Kozloff and the Striders are putting on a limited number of races these days. But the biggest is a huge one — the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will attract 25,000 participants May 31 at Comerica Park. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Striders were the host club for more than 30 races a year and there were about 1,200 members. That made it one of the five biggest run- ning clubs in the country. In 2000, there were more than 50,000 entrants in Striders' races. The Striders launched the Motor City Marathon in 1963. That race is now known as the Detroit Free Press International Marathon. After serv- ing as the marathon's race director for several years, Kozloff is now the course director. Kozloff and his wife Sue, an enor- mous help at many Striders races, have lived in the same home in Huntington Woods since 1971. They have three grown children. After serving in the U.S. Army Reserve as a medical corpsman in the early 1960s, Kozloff earned a bachelor of science degree from Wayne State University, a master of science degree from the University of Colorado, and a doctorate from Florida State University. ❑ "Apartment Homes to Suit YOUR Lifestyle" 10k.
