The Charge
The issue of criticism of Israel in the African American community has been
raised recently in the news media coverage of the Democratic presidential
primaries.
tiAC-41:1:
The Answer
The great civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. clarified the issue
more than 40 years ago: "When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You
are talking anti-Semitism:'

AJC Begins Arabic Site
American Jewish Committee-Detroit Chapter has launched Asl Al-Yahud, a new
Arabic language Web site about Jews and Judaism. It can be viewed at www.asla-
lyahud.org.
The Web site is an initiative of AJC's national office. Asl Al-Yahud — literally the
"origins of the Jews" — focuses on Jewish history, culture, and religion, connect-
ing those subjects to the long history of Jews in Arabic-speaking lands.
The content was created originally in Arabic by Ephraim Gabbai, a descendent
of the Iraqi Jewish community. The site is visually authentic to Middle Eastern
design and highlights cultural practices shared by Muslims and Jews from Arabic-
speaking nations around the globe.
Along with its informational offerings, the site offers graphic and audio compo-
nents, as well as a section for users to submit questions that will be answered in
Arabic by a member of the Asl Al-Yahud staff.
"By providing basic information about Jewish culture and religious practices
in Arabic, Asl Al-Yahud will help facilitate a deeper understanding and tolerance
towards Jews;' said Yehudit Barsky, director of the Asl Al-Yahud project. "We're
demystifying Judaism and dispelling widespread misinformation about the Jewish
people in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond."
The Detroit Chapter has a long-standing commitment to building relations
between the local Arab, Muslim and Jewish communities. The chapter hopes that
the As1A1-Yahud Web site will be of interest to Arabic-speakers in the Detroit area.

Ethnic News Roundtable
Publishers of Metro Detroit's key ethnic and minority newspapers took part in
a roundtable conference to discuss the unique and growing needs of non-main-
stream news sources. The publishers met at Wayne State University in Detroit as
part of a new, innovative networking of Michigan's diverse ethnic and minority
media. Represented were Michigan's Jewish, African-American, Korean, Arab and
Hispanic media. New Michigan Media represents the 130-plus ethnic and minor-
ity media. It is funded by a McCormick Tribune Foundation grant. Shown are Tak-
Young Kim, Michigan Korean Weekly; Elias Gutierrez, Latino Press; NMM Director
Prof. Hayg Oshagan, Wayne State University; Arthur M. Horwitz, Detroit Jewish
News; Bankole Thompson, senior editor, Michigan Chronicle.
