FESTIVAL FEVER As Memorial Day approaches, Michigan art enthusiasts
are getting ready to enjoy art and entertainment festivals around the state. The
East Lansing Art Festival, May 17-18, kicks off the season by offering works by
hundreds of artists, free entertainment, an international menu of food and activi-
ties for kids. The event, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, lets
parents browse and buy paintings, sculpture, fabric projects and much more while
allowing children to enter a creative arts competition, watch skits and storytell-
ing presentations and take part in an Instrument Petting Zoo. Patrons watching
for the return of favorite artists or about new ones can find a list at elartfest.corn,
where entertainers and their times also will be posted. (517) 319-6804.
AIR ATHLETICS Detroiters will be looking up as the city joins nine other
towns around the globe for the Red Bull Air Race World Series (top left).
Saturday and Sunday, May 31-June 1, spectators will see 12 pilots compete based
on speed, precision and skill as they use fast, agile and lightweight racing planes.
Competitors navigate low-level aerial racetracks consisting of air-filled pylons
designed for different settings. Before coming to Michigan, the pilots will show
their talents in Abu Dhabi and San Diego. After leaving the Motor City, where
the first day is for qualifying and the second is for the race, competitors will move
on to Stockholm, Rotterdam, London, Budapest, Porto, a still-to-be announced
city in Spain and Perth. Mike Mangold, last year's winner, will defend his title.
Events are supervised by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale to check
that safety measures are being employed. Go to the Web site, redbullairrace.com ,
to watch for time, location and ticket details.

HEALTHY HORSEPLAY Local women-owned businesses are banding
together to sponsor Shop and Pamper to Help a Camper, a day of eating, shop-
ping and indulging in spa and meditative services. The event will benefit Camp
Casey, a horse camp that provides one-day horseback-riding retreats to kids
battling cancer, along with their families. At various farms, youngsters and their
close relatives can spend five hours riding, learning about their surroundings and
taking part in other activities with plenty of treats as well as healthy foods. For
those unable to leave home, the horses make house calls. The event takes place
4-9 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Equilibrium Pilates Studio in Bloomfield Hills,
where 15 different boutiques will be offering their best, including Franklin Spa,
the Cupcake Station and Lulu Lemon Athletica. The camp receives 15 percent of
proceeds. (248) 705-2780; camp-casey.org .
