abbi Harold Loss of Temple
Israel was sitting in a staff
meeting when he received
the first of many
congratulations for
his presence on the
2008 Newsweek
magazine list of
America's most
influential rabbis.
"I had moved to
No. 42 from No. 47
and was 12 of 25 on
the list of congregational rabbis:' Loss
quipped. "Many of my friends took
credit for work that they had done to
accomplish the jump on list No. 1 and
the placement on list No. 2."
Loss was cited for leading a con-
gregation of more than 12,000 people.
He said his ranking is a reflection of
his synagogue, which was founded in
Detroit in 1941 and moved to West
Bloomfield in 1980.
"When I first came to Temple Israel,"
he said, "I was fortunate to have won-
derful colleagues. Now after 37 years, I
am surrounded by a staff that is amaz-

ing. We view ourselves as the largest
small congregation in America."
He said he's pleased to be honored
by Newsweek's April 11 list, "but I
accept their praise as a statement that
Temple Israel is a unique congrega-
tion.
"At a time when our Jewish com-
munity has fewer numbers, it is the
responsibility of all of us in positions
of leadership to work to create institu-
tions that are welcoming and exciting."
Loss grew up in Florida and gradu-
ated from the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion. He came
to Temple Israel in 1971. An ardent
Zionist, he has accompanied thou-
sands of Michigan Jews to Israel over
the years on missions of all sizes.
The pressure to stay ranked is high.
"Most of that pressure he quipped,
"is coming from my mother and father
— 93 and 92 years old, respectively."
Loss responded to the Jewish
News' request to comment on his
showing in the second annual ranking
while waiting for a flight to New Jersey
to visit his grandson, who had been ill
but is now out of the hospital.
"That is what really what makes me
smile," he said.

David Ellenson, president, HUC-
JIR; 9. Shmuley Boteach, outspo-
ken broadcast host and author,

L.A.-based pulpit rabbi.
The list includes 16 Orthodox
rabbis, 15 Conservative rabbis and
15 Reform rabbis.
The Newsweek ranking is the
work of three Hollywood power
brokers: Sony Pictures CEO and
Chairman Michael Lynton; Gary
Ginsberg, executive VP, News
Corp.; and Jay Sanderson, CEO
and executive producer, JTN
Productions. The trio used a
crude rating system to determine
the rabbis' renown, including
perceived prominence, leader-
ship, influence, reputation, size of
constituency and impact on the
Jewish world.
