were written separately, and some

Orloff, who is based in New York
City but has not had a New York pro-
duction, has seen his works produced
in many smaller theaters. Affiliated
with the Association for Jewish
Theatre, which will have its interna-
tional conference hosted by JET in
May, Orloff will lead a forum for play-
wrights.
Orloff's award-winning works
include Advanced Chemistry (2002
Pickering Award for Playwriting
Excellence), Domestic Tranquility
(1999 Theatre Conspiracy New
Play Contest) and Love Sucks (1994
Playwrights First Award).
"I generally write comedy, but there
are serious moments within that:'
Orloff says. "One thing I love about
being a playwright is that you don't
have to typecast yourself. I let the idea
determine whether it will be come-
dic or not, but I like to think there is
humor in almost anything." Ci

ochelle Rosenthal, who has
appeared in The Prisoner of
Second Avenue and Social
Security for the Jewish Ensemble
Theatre, soon will portray Einstein's
mother, a lawyer, a radio technician
and others in a production of skit
comedy.
Rich Orloff's Oy! — directed
by Mary Bremer and also featur-
ing Arthur Beer, Aral Gribble,
Laurel Hufano and Aaron Moore
— runs April 29-May 24 at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
"It's really a funny show, and who
needs more tsuris?" says Rosenthal,
who has performed with the Michigan
Opera Theatre and worked at clubs
and resorts in New York. "Even the
rehearsals have been fun."
Orloff, whose comedy has been
produced by Jewish theaters across
the country, will be in Michigan in
the middle of May to answer audience
questions after at least one perfor-
mance.
"I really don't know exactly where
the characters come from:' the play-
wright says. "Every now and then, an
idea just pops into my head.
"I remember walking down the
street one day and imagining the dia-
logue between an about-to-be-born
baby and a couple of workers putting
the baby together, which became [the
playlet] last-Minute Adjustments: I
was amused by the situation, fanta-
sized about what might happen and
wrote it down."
The 13 skits in Oy! include one
about Adam and Eve and another
about Yom Kippur observed by a boy
who went through an entire year with-
out any sins.
Orloff, an Oberlin College gradu-
ate and reporter in Arkansas before
becoming a playwright, says he's
learned about dramatic projects
through trial and error over 20 years.
"I've been writing since I learned
how to spell;' he explains. "I wrote a
comic strip when I was a little kid. In
high school, I did a revue.
"Most of my plays don't have Jewish
themes. Several of the plays in Oy!
