She had more secular paths in mind. During that year, Beyer began to divide her weekdays between junior high school and the State University of New York, where she received her bachelor's degree in music at 19. She quickly moved on to years of touring as a singer-songwriter working with jazz, rock and pop groups and composing for film and television. During a stint as a staff writer for EMI Music Publishing in Nashville and working with country stars such as Tracy Byrd and Steve Azar, Beyer con- nected with the Jewish community and began creating songs for special events. Those songs, recorded on three CDs, caught the attention of an even wider Jewish audience and motivated her to focus her talents along religious lines. Her current touring schedule includes a free concert Sunday afternoon, April 27, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. "I'll be playing the piano and sing- ing with a five-piece band," says Beyer, 48, making her Michigan debut. "I will be performing all original music with many of the songs from the CDs that are out and other selections from the CD we're going to begin recording in July. "My concerts are designed to span all generations. The style varies because I enjoy many ways of expressing my spirituality and sense of connection with God. There's a lot of participation with the audience." The temple audience is likely to hear a rocking "Ahavat Olam," swaying "You Shall Love" and a hip-hopping "Sh'ma." The musicians include guitarist Gary Dales, who has worked with Roberta Flack and Ricky Scaggs; guitarist Dave Cleveland, who has performed with Miley Cyrus (Hanna Montana) and the Cheetah Girls; bass guitarist Matt Pearson, who has accompanied Steven Curtiss Chapman and Gretchen Wilson; and drummer Tony Morra, who has set the beat for Diane Warren and Steve Diamond. Stacy Beyer: "I take Jewish text and give it new music." "I take Jewish text and give it new music," says Beyer, whose albums include Find Your Voice, Must Be Chanukah and Ha Makom ("The Place")."It's fun for me to take a text that's meaningful to me and let the music find itself. It's also fun to let a prayer find another form of expression through new music." Beyer, wife of a gynecologist and mom of three, often finds herself writ- ing in the car while waiting for the youngsters to complete special activi- ties. Her personal special interest aside from music is working out in a gym. Temple Israel Cantor Michael Smolash also will be part of the con- cert. "I feel that the concert is not so much about me but the experience the audi- ence has:' Beyer explains. "I want people to sing and get up and dance if they feel like it. I hope everyone, in an hour and a half, can become part of something bigger than themselves!' ❑ Stacy Beyer performs 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at Temple Israel, 5725 Walnut Lake Road, in West Bloomfield. Free. For reservations, contact Susan Toohy at (248) 661-5700, ext. 110, or stoohy®temple-israel.org . Tickets also are available at the door.
