Harriet and Sy Lusky listen as Fred Brown leads a portion of the Haggadah
reading.
for what was always a big event with a
lot of family"
His brother Martin Brown added,
"Although they have been gone for
many years, their memories live on
strongly in the wonderful Jewish tra-
ditions they instilled in their children
and grandchildren. They were the
central pillar of our family structure
and my parents and aunts and uncles
have carried on the traditions and the
emphasis on love of family and the
importance of charitable giving:'
This past year, Rod's family made
up a significant percentage of the
guest list. Eight months before his
December 2007 wedding, he was
joined at the seder by Vicki, who
would become his wife, and their
combined offspring: Bryan, who is
now 13, 10-year-old Andrew and
5-year-old Jason Brown; and 14-year-
old Josh Murray and 11-year-old
twins, Brittany and Samantha Murray.
"They all had a phenomenal time
Rod said. "Everybody loved it."
And that includes Vicki's parents,
Fran and Ronny White of Commerce
Township. "We were just overwhelmed
and excited to be a part of the seder,"
said Fran, who coincidentally was an
old high school classmate of Helen
Brown. "Everything was so organized;
I marveled at the work and energy
that went into planning it. And there
was so much for the kids to do to par-
ticipate that they all were so absorbed
in the seder."
The Brown-Lusky plan for this year
is to go back to the seder model of
yesteryear — with the original two
extended families gathering sepa-
rately. "But we've already talked about
doing another big seder," Harriet said.
"Everyone's asking, even the young-
er generation, including our 7-year-
old grandson, Shay Lusky (of West
Bloomfield).
"It was a tremendous amount of
work, but well worth it," she said.
"When we sat down and I looked
around and up and down the tables to
see everyone sitting there together, I
knew we would definitely do it again.
Being a very close family was always
so important to my parents. Having
all of us respect their love of family so
much is quite a legacy:' Helen said. Eli
