Piatigorsky is the daughter of Uruguayan immigrant parents; her family were the only Jews in a small logging town on the coast of British Columbia. New Program For Kids Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park has an innovative KinderReady pro- gram developed for children who will be 5 by Jan. 1. KinderReady offers an age-appro- priate kindergarten experience. The curriculum includes Chicago Math, Zoophonics and a literature-based readiness program for reading. Children will learn to write journals, stories and to explore different hands- on media in art and science. The class will be taught by expe- rienced, certified teachers. It will offer academics in the morning and enrichments with the option of an all inclusive Hebrew program (developed by the Beth Shalom Religious School Director Bosmat Dovas), creative movement, karate, art, science and computers in the afternoon early and after care is available from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. The academic curriculum will be developed for each child with a teacher ratio of one to five. Award For Scouts For the second consecutive year, Venturing Crew 18, chartered to the Jewish War Veterans Department of Michigan, has been chosen as the Venturing Crew of the Year by the Clinton Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Crew 18's activities revolve around their themes of "Outdoor Adventure and Community Service." The crew's members attend the Frankel Jewish Academy in West Bloomfield and Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills. Venturing is the high school age, co-ed program of the Boy Scouts of America. Remembering Genocide The Annual Holocaust and Armenian Genocide Commemoration will take place at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center, 495 W. Ferry Mall, on the Wayne State campus in Detroit, on Friday, May 2, beginning with regis- tration at 9:30 a.m. This year's program, "Child Survivors of Genocide: A Comparative Approach: will feature multimedia presentations by Professor Joanna Michlic of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, Professor Donald E. Miller of the University of Southern California and Lorna Miller, an independent researcher. Topics include "The law Memory of War': The Example of the Jewish Children of the Otwock Orphanage Recounting their Experiences" and "Genocide Orphans of Armenia and Rwanda: A Comparison of Armenian and Rwandan Child Survivors." The program will include a con- tinental breakfast. Co-sponsors are the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies; the Armenian Research Center and the Voice-Vision Survivor Oral History Archive at the University of Michigan-Dearborn; and the Armenian Studies Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
