"When Your Feet Feel Good, You Feel Good!"
non-invasive test used
to identify disease in the
arteries of the neck may
be the best initial tool
for predicting whether
someone is at risk of
heart disease and stroke,
according to a study
at the Detroit-based
St. John Hospital and
Gerald
Medical Center.
Cohen
The study was pre-
sented at the recent 2008
American College of Cardiology's 57th
Annual Scientific Session in Chicago.
Previous research using invasive
coronary angiogram has shown a
strong link between carotid artery dis-
ease and atherosclerosis in the heart,
known as hardening of the arteries.
The St. John Hospital study examined
this link on 150 patients by perform-
ing ultrasound of the carotid arteries
along with a high-speed CT scan.
Doctors found a significant correlation
between the two tests.
Carotid artery plaque was
discove"This study is further evidence
that, in patients free of heart disease
symptoms, carotid ultrasound may
be the desired initial imaging tool to
screen for atherosclerosis:' said Gerald
Cohen, M.D., director of non-invasive
cardiology at St. John Hospital and
Medical Center and the study's senior
investigator.
"Hardening of the arteries is very
common:' he added. "The process
starts in childhood and occurs in
many parts of the body, though
unevenly. Carotid ultrasound screen-
ing is an alternative to CT or comple-
ments CT of the heart by looking at
another area of possible disease."

Hills, a wife, mother, avid
yoga student and executive
coach celebrating her 10-year multiple
sclerosis anniversary, teams up with
local yoga instructors April 25-27 to
raise awareness and yoga scholarship
funds for MS.
"The mission is to raise $1 for each
of Michigan's 18,000 residents who
suffer daily challenges from MS:' says
event co-chair Mindy Eisenberg, who
specializes in teaching therapeutic
yoga for students with MS.
Teaming up for the weekend are
the Yoga Shelter, Franklin Athletic
Club, Jockey Comfort Clothing, Yoga
Spirit and Wellness, LLC, and North
Farmington High School singing
group 6 Degrees North.
The weekend begins with the Yoga
Shelter Moves MS benefit 7-9 p.m.
Friday, April 25, at 6363 Orchard Lake

Mall. A $20 donation to the MS
Foundation is suggested.

mentary, but donations to the MSF are

to funding research and services for
MS, will go toward a yoga scholar-
ship program sponsored by the MS
Foundation for Michigan patients who
suffer from MS and financial need, but
wish to use yoga therapy to address
symptoms.
Participants at the Yoga Shelter will
