Farmington Hills mayor
and current council
member, Tuesday
declared her
candidacy as a
Democrat for state
representative in
the 37th District,
representing
Farmington and
Farmington Hills.

She is running
on a platform of fiscal responsibility
"I am proud of my record that
for the last 12 years as council
member and mayor, I balanced the
city budget in good times and bad
without increasing the local mill-
age rate Barnett said. "I can think
of no better day than April 15, Tax
Day, to discuss the fiscal problems
that face Michigan."
She pledges to continue working
in a bi-partisan fashion.
"It's time to elect someone who
puts the people first rather than
partisan agendas;' she said. "I have
successfully solved problems in a
creative way and helped establish
Farmington Hills as one of the pre-
mier cities in the country, and one of
the safest in the state of Michigan."
Barnett completed her four-year
tenure as mayor in November. She
was first elected to the city council
in 1995 and elected mayor in 2003.
An investment consultant with
LPL Financial in Farmington Hills,
Barnett has been active nationally
in public safety communications
and municipal finance. She serves
on a U.S. Department of Homeland
Security committee to improve
emergency technology.
Barnett is architect of the North
Coast Project, an effort to create an
alliance of the Great Lakes states
to foster cooperation for economic
development and revitalization, and
to bring jobs and technology to the
region and Michigan in particular.
She is married to attorney Mark
Steckloff. They have two children.
The couple has lived in Farmington
Hills since 1981.
