I USED TO BE
A DEMOCRAT.

To be a New YorkJewish intellectual meant being a Democrat And so it was in my case.
I don't think I met a Republican until Ifinished graduate school at Columbia.

To be a Democrat meant being against Nazism and Communism, meant being open
minded, meant regarding race as insignificant, meant fighting evil because America was
supposed to fight evil.

I am still for fighting against the evils of
the world, for regarding a person's skin color as

of no consequence, for being intellectually open,
and for America using its unique power to vanquish
great evils whenever possible.

lhat's why I left the Democratic Party. It no longer

and still cherish. It couldn't even support labeling the
Soviet Union an evil empire. And these past months,
Democrats could not muster the courage to say the words "Islamic terror" in any of their
presidential debates.

The Republican Party fights evil. The Democratic Party fights carbon dioxide emissions.

That, in a nutshell, is why I became a Republican — to preserve the liberal values I was
raised with.
