The Hechtman complex is fully
insured and most residents also have
insurance on their personal belongings,
according to Pete Wurdock, JAS market-
ing director. Most Hechtman II residents
pay their own rent, but Hechtman I resi-
dents are low-income seniors requiring
subsidies from the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development. Funds
for special JAS programs are provided by
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit ($226,479 in 2007), the United
Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan
Detroit and private donations.
The Jewish community rallied to the
support of the fire victims, resulting in
a generous outpouring of donations of
clothing and money in the past week.
The Meer Apartments became a bee-
hive of activity, with a temporary JAS
office, meetings, press conferences and
rooms filled with clothing.
"I am very proud to live in this
community',' Goldsmith Kamin said.
"The response from various agencies,
synagogues and individuals has been

tremendous."
On the night of the fire, members
of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield
delivered 40 cartons of clothing and
toiletries purchased at the Costco store
in Commerce. "The manager added $100
and employees collected $80 among
them',' Goldsmith Kamin said.
JAS staff social workers and those
from sister agencies, such as Jewish
Family Service, will continue to monitor
the needs of residents. Because of the
community's generosity, JAS has reached
its goals for basic essentials and furnish-
ings and now is accepting monetary

Residents who lost crucial papers and
identification in the fire, such as driver's
licenses, marriage licenses and birth
certificates, also will receive aid from
the clerk's offices in Oakland and Wayne
counties. The Oakland County Clerk
