Josh Lichtman,
the son of Rene
and Cathy
Lichtman of West
Bloomfield, will
speak on "Life
in Post-Katrina
New Orleans"
Friday, April 18,
at Congregation Beth Ahm in West
Bloomfield as part of the shun
Shabbat Limud series.
Lichtman is the New Orleans
program director for AVODAH, the
yearlong program for people ages
21-26 that combines work at urban
anti-poverty organizations with
exploring Jewish learning and com-
munity building.
AVODAH, meaning "service," was
founded in 1998. In New Orleams,
it seeks to respond to the need for
longer-term volunteers, advance the
city's anti-poverty organiztions and
aid the Jewish community.
Growing up, Lichtman attended
Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park and
Southfield-Lathrup High School
and was active in BBYO. He is a
graduate of George Washington
University in Washington, D.C.,
and the New York University law
school. He also studied at Pardes, a
coed pluratlistic acedemy of gradu-
ate-level Torah study in Jeruaalem.
He has participated in the annual
environmental-awaremenss bike
rides in Israel sponsored by New
York-based Hazon and helped
found an independent minyan in
Brooklyn.
Shabbat Limud is open to the
community. It features a 6 p.m.
Kabbalat Shabbat service followed
by dinner at 7 p.m. ($20 adults, $12
ages 4-10, no charge for age 3 and
under). Parallel Tot Shabbat service
and dinner for ages 2-7 begins at
6:15 p.m. Child care will be avail-
able throughout the evening.
There is no charge for Josh
Lichtman's talk, which will begin
at about 7:45 p.m. Walk-ins are
welcome for services and for the
after-dinner program. Dinner is
