hen he heard about the
Hechtman fire, Mark Klar's
first thought was about his
Aunt Blanche, a resident of Hechtman
II. Klar, owner of Warren Sav-Mor
Prescriptions at Middlebelt and 14 Mile,
raced to the scene to be sure his aunt was
out of harm's way. Blanche Klar is now
safely at her sister's home.
But Klar was not done. JAS officials
made announcements that Klar was
in the Meer Apartments lobby, and he
helped residents sort through their pre-
scription needs. "Everyone was so orga-
nized; it was unbelievable Klar said.
Because his store makes deliveries to
Hechtman and Meer residents Monday
through Friday, Klar had a lot of work
to do. Those residents who were within
the refill period for their prescriptions
were handled routinely. Other residents
were given a five- to seven-day supply
of their medications until Klar or their
own pharmacies can contact doctors and
insurance companies.
JAS, which stores the residents' pre-
scription records off-site, brought the
records to the Meer command post.
"Fifty percent of the prescriptions we
filled were at no charge Klar said. "We'll
have to talk to the insurance companies
to see how we can bill them:' He said
some of the companies will be very
understanding while others won't be able
to figure out why a client who just filled
a prescription will be requesting another
supply. "We'll just have to make them
aware of the situation:'
Klar returned to Meer at 9 p.m.
Wednesday with donations of toiletries
and undergarments and was astonished
at the lines of donors. "It was a beautiful
sight," he said.
Mitzi Barnett was lucky. She was able
to return to her first-floor apartment in
Hechtman I on Friday after staying with
her daughter, Marsha Hoffert of West
Bloomfield. But when the fire alarm first
sounded, she was panicked because she
had to leave her medications behind.
"Mark Klar filled two prescriptions for
me Barnett said. "He came to Meer, wrote
down names and prescription numbers
himself. When my daughter went to pick
up the medications, he told her, `You've
been through enough; go take care of your
mother: He did this for so many people.
He's absolutely unbelievable." ❑
