Front Lines JNenlin NOTEBOOK This Week www.JNonline.us Famous Last Words G ive me liberty or give me death!" (Patrick Henry) "I regret that I have but one life to give for my coun- try." (Nathan Hale) "Ooops!" (anonymous, but all too well known). We have all shared certain experiences during which any number of famous utterances may occur, not because they were said by someone famous, but because they are so revealing as last words. Being in the presence of ani- mals may elicit some remarks that might just be precluding a disaster. Consider: •Aww, what a cute little fish ... •Nice doggie. • Here kitty, kitty, kitty There are many situations that we may find ourselves in and we are sure we are masters in control: At least we do not care to admit otherwise. So we may voice one of the following gems of doom: • Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. • Dad, why is this apple on my head? (William Tell Jr.?) • Did you hear thun- der? Oh, well, hurry up and putt. • No, the current is not strong. • I've done this before. • I've never felt bet- ter. •The boss won't mind. • The ice is safe. •This won't hurt. • It'll shrink in the wash. • It's always sunny there this time of year. Whenever we are in new areas, we are loath to appear unknow- ing and, as a result, we end up lost. That could lead to one of Cycling For A Cause Two good friends from Farmington Hills are busy training for the ultimate bicycle ride this summer. Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit graduates David Grant, 23, and Scott Shapiro, 27, plan to pedal 3,600 miles from Manteo, N.C., to From right, Scott Shapiro, San Diego. The incentive isn't only David Grant, and Scott's brother Brian, 25 a love of cycling. They'll raise money as part of Bike & Build, which organizes cross-country bicycle trips to benefit affordable housing groups. B&B's young-adult participants have pedaled 2.2-million miles and have donated $1.14 million over the past five years. Each of this year's 27 participants must raise $4,000 (go to www. bikeandbuild.org for participant links). Shapiro, a University of Michigan alumnus, works in corporate finance for Columbus-based Limited Brands. Grant will graduate from U-M in April with two engineering degrees. The two have a summer landscaping business as well. They will ride to support low-income housing to benefit the Orange County Habitat for Humanity chapter in Orange County, N.C. The North Carolina location better fit their schedules. "We will be ceremoniously dipping our rear wheels into the Atlantic on May 20 and will end two months later by dipping our front tires into the Pacific — on July 23," Grant said. these famous lines: • Let's not get excited. • Let me handle this. • Don't panic. • I'll just slip into the commuter lane for a second. • I never get lost. I do not know about you, but I am not a mechanically minded person. I can, therefore, easily associate with these lines: •Anyone here have a match? • Cut the red one! • Oh, I wouldn't worry about that noise. It's probably nothing. Or It's supposed to make that noise. •We don't need to follow the instruction manualit looks obvi- ous. • I'll get the toast out. A8 April 10 • 2008 When it comes to trying new foods or drink, it's better to be more than suspicious. Otherwise: • These are the safe kind of mushrooms. •This doesn't taste right. • It's probably just a rash. If you have seen enough stock film footage, then you are sure to recognize some of these lines and know what plot developments will follow: •Well, we've made it this far. •What's that beeping noise? •Why are you guys smiling like that? •Yes, I'm sure the rope is good. •You won't get me alive. Now, if you are interested in having the last word, that is a whole different game, not one that I can be much help with; sorry. But whatever happens, keep in mind that, "Everybody will be just fine' ❑ Do You Know This Cutie? He's probably in his 60s, 70s or 80s now, because this 8x10" pho- tograph is in a 10x14" cardboard frame that reads "Portrait by Warren J. Coville, Detroit" with a notation in silver script under the photo: "by Holland:' The photo was found among thousands of books that were donated to Bookstock, the used book and media sale going on through Sunday at Laurel Park Place shopping center in Livonia to benefit literacy programs in Metro Detroit. Bookstock co-chair Roz Blanck says the photograph is among numer- ous personal keepsakes that are found in the donations each year. Among the items volunteers have found in the past were a pre-World War II letter from Europe, an album of bar mitzvah photos that Blanck was able to return to the owner, a wedding photo of a woman who had just recently died and a stamp collection.
