n Saturday evening, April
19, Jews all over the world
will mark the beginning of
Passover with the first seder, thereby
observing the oldest and most widely
celebrated ritual taking place in Jewish
homes. Guided by the Haggadah that
contains instructions for conducting
the seder, they will read the story of
the Israelites' Exodus from Egypt.
Each year, new Haggadot and many
other books surrounding the seder
are released. This year is no excep-
tion. To help make your seder more
thought-provoking, fun — and deli-
cious — here are some new editions
for your consideration.

FOR THE SCHOLAR
•My People's Passover Haggadah
(Vols. I and II) edited by Lawrence
A. Hoffman and David Arnow
(Jewish Lights; $24.99).
These two volumes open with
nine essays on Passover, six of
which were written by Hoffman (a
rabbi) and Arnow (a psychologist).
They deal with such subjects as the
Haggadah, Christianity and the seder,
the seder plate, and feminism and
the Haggadah. In the rest of the two
volumes, the actual Haggadah is pre-
sented using the talmudic format of
Hebrew text in the center of the page
with commentaries and translations
around it.
• The Eybeshitz Haggadah by
Shalom Hammer (Devora
Publishing; $24.95).
In this volume, for serious Torah
scholars only, American-born Israeli
Rabbi Shalom Hammer translates the
Haggadah commentary of Yehonatan
Eybeshitz, an 18th-century rabbi
and kabbalist who lived in Hamburg,
Germany. Hammer adds his own com-
ments on the text as well.
•A Mystical Haggadah by Rabbi
Eliahu Klein (North Atlantic Books;
$16.95)
In a spiritual interpretation of the
seder, Klein, who has taught Kabbalah,
Jewish meditation and Chasidism for
more than 30 years, offers a transliter-
ated text with new translations and
commentary, including many Chasidic
teachings new to English translation
and a step-by-step guide to the 15
steps of the seder.
