now is the time for the book and I
just started the same day — plan-
ning, researching and note taking. The
move from being a daily news reporter
to writing a book is a huge step, but it
didn't pose any obstacle.

JN: What did you learn about your-

self through the book?
MF: People always ask why I do
this job, and I never had a good rea-
son until I wrote Breaking News. I
began to understand that there was
a link between the kind of disasters
and wars that I'd been covering for
so long and my own family history
[during the Holocaust]. Also, I always
hated bullies and sided with victims,
and maybe that's because of my fam-
ily history, which was an interesting
revelation as I started to think about
myself.

JN: What do you want readers to

find?
MF: I hope they realize that our
problems [in the West] are dwarfed by
the problems of most people in Africa
and around the world. I'm just thank-
ful for what I have and I hope readers
think about their own lives and can be
thankful for what they have.

JN Aside from what you've written

about the Israeli-Palestinian con-
flict, what are the crucial issues in
Israel that you think American Jews
should know more about?
MF: There's such a tight connection
between Israel and American Jewry,
but in Israel, they think that link
is weakening. They feel that young
American Jews no longer have that
same automatic reflex of support for
Israel. One of my sons was part of
groups of soldiers who accompany
young people on the Birthright tours.
His impression was that this is a
critical way of keeping the link strong.
Another key issue involves supporting
Israel as the military threat becomes
more difficult. Israel is under grow-
ing military pressure even though its
strength far outweighs the strength of
any nation near it.

IN: Is Tony Blair active as a Middle

East envoy?
MF: I think he began with good
intentions but very quickly under-
stood that he's not going to get any
further than any of the other envoys. I
think he spends about a week a month
in Israel but wants out of that job.

people trying to promote peace in
that area?
MF: I've been invited to various
forums for peace, and they always
bring together like-minded people,
journalists or peace activists. My
advice is to reach out to the people
who are not normally involved in
peace movements — the vast majori-
ty of Israelis and Palestinians. It hasn't
worked to bring peace from the top
down. It has to come from the bottom
up. At the moment, they are still a long
way from any real step toward peace.
If there were a peace agreement on
the table ready to be signed, I'm sure
65 percent of Israelis and Palestinians
would sign it regardless of the details
because they've had it up to here with
the conflict.

away from all the difficult problems
you cover?
MF: I like skiing, catamaran sail-
ing, walking the dogs on the beach
and, best of all, being at home with the
family. I just came back from Jackson
Hole, [Wyo.], and that was great.

JN: What do you hope the future

holds for your career?
MF: I want to go to places where
I can see that I'm really making
some change. I've been to Africa four
times in the last six months and had
extraordinary viewer response. They
write to NBC and say they want to
help, and then I put them in touch
with people they can help directly.

JN: Do you have any other books in

the works?
MF: I just signed a contract to do a
book on Israel. It's about Israel today,
and it will be literary, anecdotal and
political.
