Mishpoch-Chai was conceived by Molly Chernow and Nikki Raimi, two friends who recently traveled to Poland and Israel on a Federation Mission. While in Jerusalem, they befriended a Holocaust survivor who inspired them to enhance the lives of Holocaust survivors back home in Michigan. Through Wendy Pittman of the Humanitarian Aid Foundation, Chernow and Raimi were intro- duced to the Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families, a service of Jewish Home & Aging Services. Together with friend Ellen Cogan Lipton, they joined with Dr. Charles Silow, director of the Program for Holocaust Survivors and Families, and developed Mishpoch-Chai. Mishpoch-Chai is an enrichment program in which young American Jewish families are matched with Holocaust survivors to enjoy cultural activities and programs together. At the first Mishpoch-Chai program March 13, 18 Holocaust survivors and 18 young American Jewish fami- lies celebrated Purim. The children, dressed in Purim costumes, and the survivors played games, shared a meal and danced to music by Rennie Kaufmann. The children were able to meet and get to know these very special people, the young adults learned more about the Holocaust and about these indi- vidual survivors and the survivors took great pleasure in meeting new friends. A summer picnic, a Chanukah program and Shabbat visits are being planned. ❑ Dealing With Grief Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills will hold a healing service 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8.
