Dear
Bar , me-
time ago you
wrote about
caffeine in
the context of
blood glucose levels, what else can
you tell me about caffeine? Beth.

nswm Dear Beth, Caffeine
is a naturally occurring
_substance and additive
that can be found in such diverse
items as coffee, tea, chocolate, soft
drinks, "energy" drinks, stimu-
lants, pain relievers, diuretics,
cold and allergy remedies, weight
control pills, and other substances.

Inappropriate intake of caffeine
may lead to a host of issues:
• May be addictive;
• May cause anxiety and
•
interfere with sleep;
• May have a diuretic
,,. , effect (increased urina-
y,, tion);
) • Increased risk of fi-
i Y brocystic breast disease;
i
• May contribute to
calcium loss;
• If consumed by preg-
nant or lactating women
may lead to low birth weight and
may be passed in breast milk;
• Increased risk of developing
irregular heartbeat and may
increase blood pressure;
• May trigger acid reflux;
• And the list goes on ... .
If you choose to consume caffeine,
please do so in moderation, i.e., no
more than 1 to 2 cups of coffee/tea
(about 200-300 mg) per day. Check
with your physician or dietitian.
