he intensity of Jewish
Ensemble Theatre's
production of Women's
Minyan, a drama by Naomi Ragen
running through April 13 at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield, is felt
before any of the char-
acters speak their first
lines.
As audience members move into
the theater, 10 women sit down on
straight-backed chairs at the edge of
the stage. The women wear various
forms of modern dress: form-fitting
sweaters, thigh-high skirts, short-
sleeved T-shirts.

As an unseen male narrator begins
to recite the dress code for females
who adhere to fervently Orthodox
Judaism, the women, in unison, begin
to change their clothes. They follow
the instructions set forth by the deep
voice — rolling down sleeves, pull-
ing up stockings, lowering skirt hems
until their knees are covered by the
prescribed number of inches, wrap-
ping scarves around their heads until
every curl is concealed.
When the narration, per-
formed by Rabbi Aaron
Bergman, stops, it is not just
the women's clothing that has been
transformed; their expressions have
Changed from carefree to somber.
When a young woman bursts into the
middle of the group, her face marked
by anguish and the blood of freshly
inflicted bruises, the women try to

hat do Dr. Seuss and
Mozart have in common?
Composer-conductor-
commentator Rob Kapilow.
Detroit audiences will have a chance
to see the relationship when Kapilow
leads the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
through his staged concert Green Eggs
and Hamadeus, which combines the
Dr. Seuss children's story Green Eggs
and Ham with Mozart's Eine Kleine
Nachtmusik.
Kapilow, who also develops creative
concerts for adults, will interact with
family audiences 10 and 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, March 29, at Detroit's Max
M. Fisher Music Center.
"This is the very first kids' piece
that I created:' says Kapilow, 53, who
has appeared in Aim Arbor. "I have
children myself and decided I wanted
to create concerts that would be fun
for them.
"One of the main reasons I wanted
to work with this story is because it's
so powerful against prejudice. Green
Eggs and Ham represents all those
things we're sure we won't like before
we try them.
