Spring Into Opera

At 15, Andy Statman took bluegrass
mandolin lessons from a young David
Grisman. By 17, he was playing saxo-
phone and learning jazz. At 19, his
interest turned to the folk music of
Eastern Europe, which led to serious
study with a number of master musi-
cians including one of the fathers of
contemporary klezmer music, Dave
Tarras. That music became a catalyst
for Statman's own spiritual search
for identity; today he is a practicing
Orthodox Jew living in Brooklyn.
Considered a gifted muscian and a
driving force behind the neo-klezmer
movement, Statman shows the influ-
ence of the musical traditions he's

Michigan Opera Theatre opens its
2008 spring opera season March
29-April 6 at the Detroit Opera
House with the company's first-ever
production of Vincenzo Bellini's La
Sonnambula, a haunting tale of love,
betrayal and redemption set in an
1830s Swiss village.

masterpiece to Detroit audiences for

in the opera world as Renata Scotto
(a leading soprano who is now a suc-

Stella. A Brit com-
pany financed the film, so it's set in
London.
As the movie opens, the beautiful
and pregnant Libby (played by Brit
actress Thandie Newton) is about
to marry Dennis (Brit comic actor
Simon Pegg). But he leaves her at the
altar. Fast-forward five years, and
Dennis' life is a wreck: He is working
as a security guard and living in a
basement apartment.
Libby, meanwhile, is raising

marathon race ahead of Azaria, he
can convince Libby to come back
