Berlin T he Forgotten Photographs:' an exhibition of photos taken by Israeli press photographer Paul Goldman from 1943 through 1961, opened at the Willy Brandt Haus in Berlin, Germany, on March 12 in commemoration of Israel's 60th anniversary. In attendance were members of the German Parliament and Vice President of the Israeli Knesset Colette Avital. The current exhibit contains photos from the collection owned by Farmington Hills-based real estate developer Spencer M. Partrich, who bought 40,000 negatives from Goldman's widow in Tel Aviv in 2001. Stored for years in an attic, among the negatives were images of historic figures and events from Israel's early years, including well-known pictures of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion performing a headstand on a Herzliya beach. About 2,000 negatives have been restored so far; 106 of these were compiled as a world-class photographic exhibition. Since its initial opening at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv Al Qaida Demands Attacks On Jews, U.S. Jerusalem/JTA — Al Qaida renewed its call for Muslims to attack Jews and the United States. "Muslims! Today is your day:' Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, said in a voice recording posted Monday on the Internet. "Hit the interests of the Jews and the Americans and all those who participated in the aggression against Muslims!' Zawahri appeared to be referring to Israel's offensive against Hamas rocket crews in the Gaza Strip this month in which scores of Palestinians, among them civilians, were killed. "Monitor the targets, collect the money, prepare the ord- nance, plan accurately — and then attack:' Zawahri said. "No one can say today that we should fight the Jews in Palestine only." The message also denounced Denmark for its cartoons lampooning the prophet Mohammed, and Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia for their ties to the West. in September 2004, the exhibit has traveled around the world, stopping at the Jewish Museum in Vienna; the Art House in Singapore; and the Breman Museum in Atlanta as well as Budapest, Bangkok, New Delhi, Riga, Detroit and Baltimore. In addition to the Berlin showing, "The Forgotten Photographs" is currently on display at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City and at the Israeli Embassy in Taipei, Taiwan. "It was a double-edged sword for me as a Jew having Paul Goldman's photographs exhibited on German soil;' said Partrich. "I was proud and honored that the Willy Brandt Haus chose our pictures to represent the birth of Israel and its early years as part of a conference to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary. Partrich added, "Yet I can't forget how Paul Goldman was forced to flee his native Hungary in 1940 because of the Nazis and all that occurred in Berlin and Germany 70 years ago. Having his photographs there today is some small retribution for him and for us!'
