eshivat Akiva's 44th annual
dinner, to be held April 6
at Adat Shalom Synagogue
in Farmington Hills, will honor Dr.
Robert Kelman as Alumnus of the Year.
The school also will honor Akiva's past
presidents with Leadership Awards.
Kelman's involvement with Akiva
dates back to the Southfield school's
inception; his childhood memories
include groups of adults meeting in
his parents' living room, envisioning a
religious Zionist Jewish day school and
laying the groundwork for its estab-
lishment.
Kelman is a specialist in emergency
medicine. He has coordinated the
acquisition of defibrillators in local
synagogues and schools. As co-chair
of the Jewish Federation's Maimonides
Medical Society, he has made it a pri-
ority to enhance awareness of genetic
diseases.

He is a founding member and
Fellow of the American Academy of
Emergency Medicine. He also has
worked through his association with
the Project Chessed Committee and
the Gary Burstein Clinic to help assure
medical care for individuals who are
without health insurance.
"Dr. Kelman embodies the values
that Akiva promotes in its students.
Akiva's educational leadership is
directed towards helping students
acquire the skills needed to balance
an active Jewish lifestyle with a strong
commitment to the world at large
— tikkun olam [repair of the world] at
its best:' said Akiva's executive direc-
tor, Sidney Katz.
The dinner, catered by Jewel Kosher
Catering, will begin with cocktails at
5:30 p.m.; dinner follows at 6:30. Cost
is $180 per person. For reservations,
call Akiva, (248) 386-1625. ❑

New Generation

MSU Hillel trains future leadership.

East Lansing

W

ith an eye to the future
and an emphasis on
guided self-discovery,
Michigan State University Hillel
has developed its Emerging Jewish
Leadership training program. The goal
is to prepare effective campus leaders
and Hillel interns.
From 35 applicants, 21 students
were accepted into the six-week lead-
ership training program. Students,
who meet at Hillel on Sundays, hear
speakers that include MSU fac-
ulty experts on leadership, Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit
professionals and Hillel staff.
Topics focus on leadership from a
Jewish perspective, effective leadership,
personal leadership development, suc-
cessful programs and engaging both
campus and community. The students
will also attend national leadership
seminars.
Cindy Hughey, executive director of
MSU's Lester J. Morris Hillel Jewish
Center, feels this knowledge will give

students a deeper understanding of
Hillel's mission of student-led campus
programming produced by special
project teams.
"Our student leaders will be even
stronger, more confident and likely to
serve longer terms as Jewish Union
Board members, who motivate and
involve others in campus and commu-
nity activities."
Howard Neistein, chief administra-
tive officer of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit and a recent
program speaker, said, "Leadership
requires more than honing one's com-
munication and interpersonal skills.
Leaders also need a vision, passion
and a framework of values that help
them to make the world a better
place."
He suggested "student leaders take
opportunities to understand their
Jewish roots and be active in student
life. The involvement will make their
college experience more satisfying and
will help to ensure the next generation
of Jewish leaders."
