hree years ago, a new tradition began in Michigan Region B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, an annual fundraiser called Fashion Unleashed. The event allows
local B'nai B'rith Youth Organization teens to model the latest spring trends
from local stores so the community can see what clothes are "hot" for spring.
"Fashion Unleashed this year was unlike all other years;' said Stephanie Horwitz, 16,
of Emunah BBG, who co-chaired the event with Zac Berlin, 18, Kishon AZA. Both are
regional vice presidents as well.
"It was followed with Arnie Pooloza — a tribute to [retired BBYO director] Arnie
Weiner. This year was the largest in all three years."
More than 600 people gathered at Orchard Mall in West Bloomfield on March 15 to
watch the hottest teen-friendly trends being flaunted on the runway by more than 65
teens. The finale was an amazing tribute to Weiner, who served BBYO teens here for 39
years.
The entire mall was decked out in balloons, smiling faces and an array of stations. "I
walked inside and did not recognize the place,' said Marni Weinstein, 16, Ahavah BBG.
"There was a chocolate fountain and so much more. I had heard that everything was
donated, which was really special."
The fashion show lasted roughly 35 minutes and featured more than 50 spring out-
fits for guys and girls. Teens showed off adorable clothes, fun trends, bright colors and
loads of accessories. Runway walks varied, depending on the clothing the models wore.
Participating stores were Guys N' Gals, Annie Sez, TWC, the Shirt Box, Eleganza, Yoga
Shelter and Moosejaw.
Though tabulations are not final, it is expected that funds raised this year will exceed
last year's $18,000.
The 'Arnie Pooloza' part of the event paid tribute to Weiner's many years of commit-
ment, dedication, passion and heart for BBYO. Many speakers from his past told about
how he touched their lives and helped them pursue and soar in their futures.
Now, Eric Adelman, a former AZA member who grew up around Arnie, takes over as
director, ready to create his own legacy. ❑
