Dear
Bar , ere's
been a lot of
buzz lately
about obese
children suffer-
ing from adult diseases. Can you
shed some light on that. Lori.

A

nswer: Dear Lori, a recent
article in the South Florida
Sun Sentinel details what
many believe is a serious prob-
lem with long-term implications
regarding the health of our nation's
children (and adults).

The article documented a number
of cases in Florida and elsewhere
where adolescent children have
suffered from (obesity-related) se-
rious adult diseases ranging from
impending diabetes to blood
pressure problems to actual
heart attacks (at age 12).

Further, as noted in the
) article, , roughly 6 one
t in
children
18 and
'
one in seven younger
than 6 are considered
obese (childhood obe-
sity = weighing more
than 95% of children the
same age). That's three
times as many as in 1980.

The article identified
familiar culprits: diets high in fast/
processed food, snacks and giant
portions, sedentary lifestyles built
around TV and computers, and
food propping up self-esteem and
relieving boredom, among others.

A full-on family commitment with
professional nutritional assistance
is generally believed to be the best
solution to this serious problem.
