he Frankel Jewish Academy
in West Bloomfield is actively
searching for professionals to
replace its top three administrators:
Rabbi Lee Buckman, head of school;
Rosalie Cohen,
academic dean;
and Rabbi Aaron
Bergman, Judaic
dean.
Bergman has
been hired as a
pulpit rabbi by Adat
Rabbi Lee
Shalom Synagogue
Buckman
in Farmington Hills
and begins his new
job when the school
year ends. Cohen's
association with the
school ended in late
January; at that same
time, Buckman went
on academic leave.
Dr. Marc
He will work part-
Borovoy
time at the 225-stu-
dent Academy until
his contract ends in June.
Dr. Marc Borovoy, FJA president, and
Danny Kurzmann,
FJA first vice presi-
dent, are leading the
search committee.
Other members are
Larry Jackier, board
member and past
Jewish Federation
president; Jenny
Lewis, FJA parent;
Robin Rosen, board member and FJA
parent; Robert Roth, a founding board
member and past FJA president; Sunny
Sharma, FJA science teacher; and FJA
board members Bill Sider and Arthur
Weiss.
Marla Erlitz, a coach and consultant
from Seattle, will work with the com-
mittee on its search. She has conducted
similar searches at other Jewish schools
and was recommended by PEJE
(Partnership for Excellence in Jewish
Education).
"We have some candidates, and we've
been in touch': Borovoy said. "Ideally,
we'd like to have someone in place [as

head of school] for the fall, but we will
be mindful and not rush. We want to
hire the right person for the school."
In the meantime, an interim admin-
istrative team is in place and Borovoy
says the school is running smoothly. In
fact, 64 student applications — simi-
lar to last year's number at this time
— are pending for the next academic
year, and Borovoy sees that as a sign of
stability.
Buckman will work with the interim
team — Bergman, Beverly Stone,
Jerry Gutman and Renee Wohl — to
advance the Jewish studies curriculum
and help plan courses for the fall. He
also will lead the senior trip to Israel
in May.
"Whatever my current status, I still
feel a close relationship with our stu-
dents and am invested in ensuring that
this year's seniors have as normal a
conclusion to their high school experi-
ence as possible Buckman said.
"Among other things, I am chaperon-
ing the 12th-grade Israel trip. The par-
ents and students have come to expect
me to be there to establish a safe, fun
and memorable trip that reinforces the
values learned over the years at FJA. I
am excited to have this experience with
them."
Buckman's plans
for next year are not
set yet, though he
is confident he will
continue to play a
strong role in Jewish
- Rabbi Buckman education.
"There is a lot of
work to be done in
the Jewish community whether locally
or in other communities and not
enough people to do it," he said. "My
energy and commitment to Jewish life
and Jewish education remain undimin-
ished, and I do not think I will have any
problem finding a place to contribute
my talents.
"I am optimistic about my future
and the school's future. FWs spectacu-
lar eight-year history speaks for itself
and will readily attract new candidates
to serve on the administrative team,
and I will continue to assist the school
so that it builds on our accomplish-
ments for many years to come." [1

"I am optimistic
about my future and
the school's future."
