"I am living the life I want — I never
imagined it:' said Sherman, who continues
his studies at Yeshiva Breslov Chut Shel
Chessed (String of Kindness).
As someone Orthodox, I wouldn't live
anywhere else because Israel is the well-
spring of Jewish life. However, it still has it
challenges — making a living and it's far
from family. That's the most difficult party"
His parents, Mark and Bonnie Sherman
of Royal Oak and Sandy Sherman of Las
Vegas, believe the move was good for him.

"Israel grounded him and gave him a
purpose Sandy Sherman said. "I'm not
sure how he would have turned out if he
had stayed in Detroit. And his life has
influenced me. I've become more religious.
I'm happy for him that he's found some-
thing he's truly committed to:'
"Israel is very good for him:' his father
Mark said. "He's responsible, has integrity
and honesty and has matured. I don't
worry about him anymore'

This Month In 1948
Jews form a conditional government.
The following news notes were in the pages
of the Detroit - Jewish News on March 5,
1948. Statehood came to Israel in May
1948.
Temporary Ruling Council
Tel Aviv/JTA — The Jewish National
Council plenary meeting decided by a
two-thirds majority to form a temporary
Jewish Council of Government composed
of Jewish Agency members residing in
Palestine, members of Vaad Leumi and
representatives of five or six major par-
ties and groups, which will elect the pro-
vincial government and provide for the
government apparatus.
Death Toll Mounts
Tel Aviv/JTA — Six Haganah men were
killed on the Tel Aviv-Jaffa border when
a Jewish detachment penetrated an Arab
sector in an attempt to upset an offensive
for which the Arabs had been preparing
for days.
At least 12 Jews and 15 Arabs met their
death last weekend. In Haifa, Haganah
penetrated the heart of the Arab area and
blew up a truck loaded with explosives
intended for use against the Jews. Five
Arabs were killed, 32 wounded and the
garage in which the vehicle was parked
and three houses were demolished.
Troop Train Attacked
Jerusalem/JTA — Twenty-six British
soldiers were killed and 50 wounded
seriously enough to require hospitaliza-
tion when a Cairo-Haifa troop train was
blown up by three mines near Rehovoth.
The Stern Group immediately assumed
responsibility for the action, asserting
that it was in retaliation for the latest
explosion in Jerusalem in which 54 Jews
died. ❑
