Congregation Beth Ahm in West Bloomfield.
With a spring theme, invitations were made of handmade seed paper, embedded
with flower seeds. She found samples on line. The pale blue paper she chose came
in 11x14-inch sheets, which was hand cut to make two invitations per sheet.
It was important, she said, "to print right onto the paper, so there was no
excess." It took her a couple of tries to find a printer who could do it successfully.
Invitations were enclosed in a velum envelope, light enough to achieve her goal
of using a single postage stamp.
When our party is over, you need not throw out this invitation," guests learned
in an accompanying explanation of how to plant the paper. "These flowers should
return every year to let you know we are thinking of you."
No separate RSVP card was enclosed. Guests responded to a special Web site.
"Everything was paperless," Katzman said. "It was so efficient. The RSVP went direct-
ly to my e-mail. It allowed us to respond to each guest. We could put information
like directions and the weather on the Web site."
After finding a buy on flower pots months before, Katzman had a local green-
