1 people were leveraging." While still at Rock Financial, Satovsky took advantage of those soar- ing values, building and selling a num- ber.of homes in Birmingham through his Yale Development Co. "I did well," he admits, "and got out just before the crash:' Satovsky is a graduate of Bloomfield Hills Andover High School and Michigan State University (business administration major with a concen- tration in finance) and he is a lifelong product of Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield. He has followed his parents, Neil and Joni Satovsky, in being active in the Jewish community. "My dad was a president of Junior Division [forerunner of the Jewish Federation's Young Adult Division - YAD] and of Jewish Apartments & Services," says Brian Satovsky. "They were both great examples. I always gave tzedakah [charity] and attended events with them But a YAD singles mission to Israel in 2000 changed his life. "I came back gung-ho; I just joined everything I could." He is a member of Federation's Board of Governors and its executive com- mittee, sits on Federation's mission and Israel and overseas committees and is on the boards of JVS and YAD. He was YAD president in 2004. He also chairs Federation's special gifts campaign division and the Fetter Fellows program, and JVS' Strictly Business Luncheon for the last two years. His e-mail program on his computer at work has separate folders for each of his communal committees. "I really immersed myself and did everything I could," he says, and claims that he learned more than he gave. "Every day, I pull up a [pledge] card and make a call" for Federation's Annual Campaign. "Sometimes we joke that its our unpaid, full-time job:' Satovsky says. "But there is no negative to it:' And the friends he has made have helped his business. "That's not why I do it, but it's an intangible." Even at the national level, he says, his charitable work has a personal impact. At the annual United Jewish Communities Young Leadership Cabinet meeting in Washington, D.C., which is taking place this week, Satovsky has met people from all over the country and made lifelong friends. Being the sole owner of a successful small business has allowed him to do it. ❑ Scholar Discusses Sports At 1 p.m. Sunday, March 30, the Jewish Forum, the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Gurock Studies at Wayne State University in Detrtoit and Young Israel of Southfield are co-sponsor- ing a.program titled "Jewish History through the Lens of Sport — Present Day Challenges to Jewish Group Identity," featuring Professor Jeffrey S.
