president. "I trust Shayna as a person of action, who will take the actions required to meet and exceed goals." Shayna's husband, Josh, 29, is direc- tor of business development at Telemus Capital Partners. Family Ties Judaism is integral to Shayna's family. Shayna grew up at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Her parents are Susan and Rabbi Harold Loss. The Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit graduate was president of the Youth Federation of Temple Israel. She studied abroad at Tel Aviv University in 1999 while a student at the University of Michigan. Since 2005, Shayna has sung with the Temple Israel Tefillah Team under Cantor Michael Smolash. As a young adult, Shayna serves on committees for the Temple Israel-spon- sored Imagine group, open to all young adults in the community. She's also active with Farmington Hills-based JARC and Federation's Young Adult Division. She characterizes the local Jewish com- munity as passionate and involved when it comes to Jewish identity for those who want to be engaged. She's especially proud of its strong connection to Israel, which she has visited as part of 10 mis- sions. She and Josh chose Huntington Woods for its neighborhoods and Jewish pres- ence as well as its programming for young families. While many young adults remain apart from the organized Jewish community, Shayna points to many others who are active. "Just about every one of our close friends serves on a board or commit- tee for a Jewish organization;' she said. "I enjoy opening up the Jewish News every week to find another young adult event featured. There are so many dif- ferent opportunities for someone to get involved in." The top challenge is clear. "I think it's to get the word out that Detroit is an ideal place for young adults to raise a Jewish family;' Shayna said. "We need more of the University of Michigan and Michigan State University graduates who moved away to see the value in return- ing." ❑ Here's To Barbara Bialick, former Detroiter of Newton, Mass., has published her new poetry chapbook collection, Times Leaves Ibbbetson Street Press).
