nswer: Dear Janine, This
(March) being National
Nutrition Month, I think
it's appropriate to discuss one of
life's little (guilty?) pleasures—di-
etary sugar. The word sugar is said
to come from the Sanskrit word,
sharkara. Sugar is generally clas-
sified in 3 groups: sucrose (table
sugar), lactose (milk sugar), and
fructose (found in many foods).

Commonly derived from
sugar cane and sugar beets,
, sucrose has a pleasing,
‘c/ , sweet taste and, histori-
\. cally, has been the most
, common food sweetener.
Unfortunately, overcon-
sumption of sucrose and
it's lower-cost cousin,
high-fructose corn syr-
up, has led to a host of
human health concerns.

Lactose is similar in chem-
ical (but not digestive) makeup to
sucrose, but with only about 20%
of the sweetness.

Fructose (e.g., in berries) has been
recommended for people with
blood sugar issues due its low GI
(Glycemic Index); however, this
benefit is now somewhat tempered
by other dietary/health concerns.

The USDA suggests to choose
and prepare food with little added
sugar and caloric sweeteners. I
hope this helps answer your ques-
tion (given the limited space).
