ISRAEL JAMES
MILLER, 82, of Oak
Park, died of pancre-
atic cancer March 6,
2008.
He was born
Feb. 16, 1926, in
Ironwood, the
Miller
youngest son of Ben
and Molly Miller.
He resided with his
sister Ann and brothers Max and Billy.
He attended Luther L. Wright High
School, where he graduated in 1944.
After graduation, he enlisted in the
U.S. Army, where he attended Officer
Candidate School, rising quickly in
the ranks and being appointed lieu-
tenant at age 19. As a tank battalion
commander in World War II, he was
wounded and sent home to be deco-
rated with the Purple Heart and Medal
of Valor.
On Dec. 7, 1947, he married Erma
"Penny" Miller in Detroit. He was
called to service once again in the
Korean War and was subsequently
wounded and again decorated for
sacrifices made on the field of battle.
While in Japan, he attended university
and learned to speak the language flu-
ently, securing him the honored duty
as tribunal escort to the emperor.
Upon his permanent return
home, he worked his way up the
ladder, from stock boy to president
of Federal's Department Stores.
In the 1990s, his career led him to
employment with the Small Business
Administration.
A devoted scholar of Judaism, he
remained active in his studies and in
Israeli affairs of state throughout his
life. He greatly enjoyed his hobby as a
magician and daily plied his craft as a
comedian, bringing laughter and joy to
all that knew him. He enjoyed keeping
up with world events and was a sports
enthusiast as well. Most importantly,

he was a loving and dedicated hus-
band, father, grandfather and a dear
friend to many. He will be missed by
all.
Mr. Miller is survived by his
wife, Penny E. Miller; daughters
and son-in-law, Sheila and Gilbert
Lafreniere of Detroit, Jann Paxton
of Tallahassee, Fla.; brother, William
"Billy" Miller of West Bloomfield;
grandchildren, Jennifer Rae Paxton,
Jason and Angeline Lafreniere, Shayna
Lafreniere.
Contributions may be made to
American Cancer Society, 18505 W. 12
Mile, Southfield, MI 48076. Interment
at Hebrew Memorial Park Cemetery.
Arrangements by Hebrew Memorial
Chapel.

YVONNE GOLDBERG MILLER, 81,
of Farmington Hills, died March 5,
2008.
She is survived by her beloved hus-
band, Ronald Miller; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Lee and Bobby Golani of Ft.
Wayne, Ind.; daughter and son-in-law,
Fran and Brian Cohen of Novi; sisters,
Teddie "Thelma" Gottlieb and Evelyn
Cohen; grandchildren, Mikki (David)
Shenkenberg, Kevin and Bradd Golani;
great-granddaughter, Rebecca Hailey
Shenkenberg.
She was the dear wife of the late
Harold Goldberg.
Interment at Adat Shalom Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to
the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy
Network or to a charity of one's
choice. Arrangements by Dorfman
Chapel.

DR. JOEL DAVID PORTNOY, 39, of
Wynnewood, Pa., died March 3, 2008.
He was a consultant in pediatrics.
Dr. Portnoy is survived by his wife,
Dr. Eron Friedlaender of Wynnewood;
son, Alexander Harris Portnoy; daugh-
ter, Emma Sara Portnoy; mother,
