isa Miriam Silver, a Nashville
recording artist and composer
who grew up in Detroit, is
returning to her Jewish roots through
a pathway she has come to know best:
music.
Silver has released Mosaic (Sweet
Silver Enterprises; $15.98), a CD that
features passages from religious writ-
ings joined with her original music,
vocals and instrumental skills.
The new album sounds very dif-
ferent from the ones that placed her
vocals in support of a long list of
country singers, such as Vince Gill, Lee
Ann Womack and Dan Seals. The com-
posing also is very different from the
songs she has written for another long
list of country stars, such as Alabama,
Reba McEntire and Randy Travis.
"I like the variety of songs featured
in Mosaic," says Silver, 55, who moved
to Nashville in the 1970s after some
studies at the University of Michigan
and many years of playing violin with
local groups. "I also like that it con-
veys a certain spirit that people have
described as 'calming!
"One song, `Kadosh: was inspired
by an article I saw in the Detroit
Jewish News. I still am a reader and
was moved by a column written by a
rabbi. I did research and discovered
that some of what the rabbi discussed
came from the Iedushah' prayer. The
lyrics are paraphrased from the trans-
lation of the prayer, and the song was
co-written with a friend, Teri Simon!'
There are 10 tracks on the record-
ing, which was completed with other
performers and writers and incor-
porates many melodic styles. Some
tracks, such as "Words to Live By" and
"Ritzei," were adapted from passages
in the Gates of Prayer, the Reform
prayer book Silver references as
music director and cantorial soloist of
Nashville's Congregation Micah.
